Improving Lives Through Patient Care and Research MSTP students combine a passion for research with a desire to serve others The Duke Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), conducted under the auspices of the Duke University Graduate School and the Duke University School of Medicine, trains highly qualified students as physician-scientists, equipping them for solving problems in human disease using the approaches and techniques of the basic biomedical and social sciences. Welcome. The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is in its 42nd year of continuous NIH support. The mission of the program is to train the next generation of physician-investigators by offering a rigorous, integrated, and supportive educational experience leading to both the MD and PhD The University of Chicago Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) was established in 1967 and is one of the longest running physician-scientist training programs in the country. Our goal is to train the next generation of physician-scientist leaders and to provide all students with rigorous scientific training that prepares them to excel in their field of interest. Case Western Reserve University (then known as Western Reserve University) created and launched the very first MD/PhD program in the country in 1956, nearly a decade before the NIH developed the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) to support this type of training, which had by then spread to other universities.

The Medical Scientist Training Program provides rigorous training for students interested in a career in clinical medicine and basic science research. The MST Program's mission is to provide students with the breadth and depth of training necessary to excel as clinician scientists. The Medical Scientist Training Programs (MSTPs) are dual-degree training programs that streamline the education towards both clinical (typically MD) and research doctoral degrees.
